You would never believe how much numeracy we could learn when finding out about Pirates. We drew a Desert Island. We then added lines to make the grid references. We shouted out a grid reference and someone had to find what was in the box. We learned how to use grid references to locate things on a map. So P4 are the people to know if you are lost or looking for something. We also used measure when we made a model of the ship “The Queen Ann’s Revenge.” This was Blackbeard’s pirate ship and you can see some of us measuring materials to create the bow.
We used our Literacy Circles to study our class novel in depth. One role is the Word Detective and we learned a lot of new vocabulary and found out meanings when we discussed our Pirate Mutiny book. We made a treasure chest and displayed the words and meanings on gold coins. We carried out lots of research, took notes and then created Lapbooks to share all the information we had collected and facts we had learned. We are very proud of our Pirate Lapbooks.
